Storytelling: Capturing Lives, Creating Communities
Since 2002, the Center for Digital Storytelling has published a text
to detail the history and methods of its digital storytelling practice.
In 2010, the Center revised and appended much of the
content to reflect the changes in our philosophy and work. One of the
most signficant revisions can be seen in the way that we present the
“7 Elements"—now "7 Steps"—a systematic
approach to help storytellers identify the fundamentals of digital storytelling,
and one of the Center's core teaching strategies.Readers will also find
new explorations of the applications of digital storytelling, an interview
with Pip Hardy and Tony Sumner of Patient Voices, and updated appendices
that provide resources for digital storytelling, including information
about past and present CDS-affiliated projects, and place-based storytelling,
a narrative-based approach to understanding experience and landscape.
See book outline below.
The
book is frequently used as a textbook by educators seeking to teach
digital storytelling as a part of a curriculum, or as supplemental material
for anyone who has taken our workshops, but it is also meant to be accessible
for anyone who is curious about the uses and methodology of digital
storytelling.
