Educator Workshop
I loved my experience at the Center for Digital Storytelling. After attending the Educator Workshop, I felt I had the skills necessary to begin to use digital storytelling with my own students. I took 213 student teachers through the digital storytelling process this year, and they loved it!

The whole concept of digital stories is excellent for today's students, who are digital natives anyhow. When I first heard of it, it was cutting edge, and it's still highly relevant because it combines personal creativity and writing with technology and visual and audio media. I've had many excellent results making these stories with high school seniors over the past five years.

Our three-day Educator Workshop is designed as a professional development opportunity for K-12 classroom teachers. This hands-on workshop supports participants as they develop powerful first-person narratives of not more than 150 words, and use these scripts to create digital stories. The workshop process includes an introduction to the "Seven Steps of Digital Storytelling," participation in a story circle, script writing and recording, and using video editing software to integrate images and audio. Short digital stories are completed during the workshop.
As they finish their digital stories, participants move into the second component of the workshop, in which we explore implementation issues. Strategies for managing the creation of digital stories in K-12 classrooms are presented, and opportunities for participants to practice their technology teaching skills are offered.
Each participant receives a CD-ROM with classroom resources for digital storytelling projects, including a software guide and a sample assessment rubric.
Pre-requisites: Basic computer knowledge, including internet use, ability to navigate a computer directory system, and ability to use basic word processing programs.
Continuing Education Credits are available through Dominican University of California (two CEUs) or University of Colorado.
This is an intensive, three-day workshop. Full participation is needed for successful completion. For a more detailed workshop description and agenda, please contact workshop@storycenter.org.
