Higher Education Workshop

Having CDS come to our campus to work with our faculty exceeded our expectations in every way. They planted seeds that have grown beyond digital storytelling, fostering broader conversations on campus concerning media literacy and digital humanities.

– William Shewbridge, Director of New Media Studio, UMBC

Our three-day Higher Education Workshop is designed as a professional development opportunity for college and universitiy faculty and staff who are interested in developing digital storytelling projects in partnership with other faculty/staff, students, or community partners. We support each participant in creating a digital story not more than 150 words in length. The creation of these shorter pieces provides hands-on experience with the entire digital storytelling process, including a story circle, script writing and recording, and video editing, using digital tools/platforms.

As they finish their digital stories, participants move into the second component of the workshop, in which we explore implementation issues. Strategies for effectively managing the creation of digital stories in higher education contexts are discussed, and issues of copyright and ethical practice are addressed.

Each participant receives classroom resources for digital storytelling, including a software guide, a sample assessment rubric, case studies of successful digital storytelling work in higher education, and more.

Pre-requisites: Basic computer knowledge, including internet use, ability to navigate a computer directory system, and ability to use basic word processing programs.

Continuing Education Credits are available through Dominican University of California (two CEUs) or University of Colorado.

This is an intensive, three-day workshop. Full participation is needed for successful completion. For a more detailed workshop description and agenda, please contact workshop@storycenter.org.

Custom Higher Education Workshops

Let the Center for Digital Storytelling bring digital storytelling to your college or university, office or department of education, or faculty/staff professional development or team-building program. Instead of having one person trained in one of our public workshops, we can help create a sustainable practice and supportive cohort of digital storytellers. These trainings bind faculty (and students) together in ways that  trainings facilitated by internal staff cannot. We offer this Higher Ed workshop as well as our Intro-to-Facilitation workshop in the United States and internationally, and customize sessions to address the specific needs of your group of educators, students, or community partners.
