Seven Stages Webinar Series

How do the stories of your life illuminate your journey and spark your creative voice?

As part of StoryLab's continued effort to develop innovative approaches to story development and story sharing, we’re offering our first ever webinar series, giving you the opportunity to take part in powerful storywork right where you are through a series of lecture and working sessions in creativity and creative writing. Register now; space is limited!

Seven Stages: Story and the Human Experience is about life’s journey: how to unearth the stories embedded in our daily lives and use them to learn about ourselves, our relationships, and our place in the community. Eight sessions will delve into the ideas behind CDS Founder Joe Lambert's upcoming book, Seven Stages: Story and the Human Experience. The first seven classes will be experimental working sessions. Each session will feature a 30-minute introductory lecture followed by two hours of writing and sharing, followed by a group summation. The final session will explore applying this approach to curriculum for schools, community arts processes, and therapeutic environments

The sessions will take place on the GoToMeeting platform. Audio will be primary, but there will be opportunity for participants to interact visually and share writing as well. Each session will be available for one-time participation, with a discounted fee for the entire series.

The series’ creator and leader is CDS's Founder Joe Lambert. Here’s what he says about this exploration of story and life process:

For the past three years, I have been exploring the relationship between story, storywork and life stages. The journey showed me a cycle of emergence and decline which I saw as a recurring pattern in biological process, the body, life stages, consciousness, personal awareness, creative process, and archetypal story structure.

My exploration of these seven layers and seven stages has now become a workbook for creativity and storytelling, which I hope to release as a CDS/StoryLab publication in the early fall. In each session, you will be my first partners in these ideas; together we will explore the structure of the workbook, exercises and prompts, ensuring that they invite and support in-depth exploration through your stories. The class is neither aimed at a specific narrative genre nor intended to be a writer’s workshop to hone or craft a poem, digital story, or short story. The work will be to awaken different facets of creative voice, allowing you to take the experience and expand your writing into whatever form excites you.

We will keep a private wiki of the process to share and comment on writing as participants wish, and as a forum for me to receive feedback on the workbook and process. This will be a mutual journey – one to which I am very much looking forward – in evolving all our understanding of story as a central part of the life experience, and evolving our practices here at CDS and with our partners and community of practitioners.

Who Should Attend

This series is aimed at professionals working with storytelling in media arts, arts education, and community arts, as well as expressive arts and other therapeutic approaches to art-making. But anyone can gain from the experience. Participants from the helping professions of counseling, therapy, peer support, diversity awareness, and organizational development and coaching will have much to gain – and much to add – to each session.
