Digital Storytelling Workshops
We are the founders of digital storytelling. These workshops provide everything you need to know in order to create and share digital stories.
Finding a story to share is a journey, often not an easy one. Yet sharing experiences about our lives is immensely rewarding and may even reveal unexpected outcomes. This free webinar is the first step of your unique digital storytelling journey, and a gateway to further explorations of image, sound, and digital media.
After 20 years of teaching the face to face version of our Digital Storytelling Workshop, the advent of cloud-based editing has made it possible for us to support a fully online version of our well-tested workshop. Over the course of six weeks, experienced StoryCenter facilitators will guide you in crafting and producing a 2-4 minute digital story based on a 300 word narration script.
Since the development of our three day workshop model in the early 1990s, we have helped some 20,000 people conceive and create their first digital story. The genre, a 2-4 minute short video – deeply personal, elegantly presented – has become a new form of communication, ideal for the social media world we now inhabit. Come to where the digital storytelling movement began, and experience the transformative power of digital storytelling!
Our traditional model of digital storytelling tends to emphasize facilitative process and a singular approach to writing over the development of a visual narrative and “ways of looking” in relation to media production. This workshop puts image and design in the spotlight, focusing on the use of visual communication in digital storytelling. For those familiar with StoryCenter's digital storytelling model, the workshop is a chance to re-consider central premises of the process while exploring visual creativity. For those new to our methods, it's a chance to experience an innovative approach to media-making.
The mobile media revolution has changed the world. 500 million people have iOS devices that can capture image, video, and sound that can be refined, edited, and shared from anywhere at anytime. Using mobile media allows for flexibility in conceiving, producing, and editing stories on the fly. This 2-day workshop adapts the Digital Storytelling Workshop curriculum to enable participants to explore tools for smartphone photography and video editing. Participants produce two- to three-minute personal video stories on a mobile platform.
The art of digital storytelling has evolved over the last 20 years. The Digital Storytelling Master Class is an opportunity for you to further explore the form and the process, to understand what it takes to make a powerful and beautiful digital story, to recognize and hone your own digital storytelling style.
At StoryCenter, we believe that facilitators must possess considerable expertise across multiple content areas in order to successfully guide people through the process of creating digital stories at the highest level of creative, educational, and ethical consideration. Our Digital Storytelling Facilitators’ Retreat is designed for those who are interested in acquiring foundational skills for assisting at or leading digital storytelling workshops. The Facilitator's Retreat offers personalized skills assessment and focused opportunities for participants to develop their capabilities in chosen content areas (story content, visual design, facilitation of individual and group processes, and technology teaching).
At StoryCenter we see the art of Digital Storytelling as equal parts creativity and facilitation. We also understand that the breadth and depth of this art form, from crafting a story to learning the teaching process, cannot be captured within a single workshop experience. We now offer a new combination of trainings, what we’re calling our Digital Storytelling Professional Package.
Listening is our core technology. These workshops explore the role of story and StoryWork practices in your life and community.
What is StoryWork? This one-hour webinar offers participants an introduction to the use of story in their personal and professional lives, and discussion of the transformative potential of story for individuals, organizations, and communities.
Holding a space for deep listening and transformational learning is sometimes a calling, but it is also a skill that can learned and assessed. This two-day workshop offers participants tools and practice in facilitating Storywork. More than ever, we need our helping professionals, our teachers, our leaders; to understand how to listen and support the emergence of voice.

StoryCenter is partnering with the National Humanities Center to offer a special three-day Humanities Moments digital storytelling workshop. We learn about the humanities in classes on history and literature, art and music, philosophy and foreign languages. They are also part of our everyday lives, helping us understand the world and our place in it. Share a story about a time when you were deeply influenced by the humanities.
