Digital Storytelling Workshops
We are the founders of digital storytelling. These workshops provide everything you need to know in order to create and share digital stories.
Finding a story to share is a journey, often not an easy one. Yet sharing experiences about our lives is immensely rewarding and may even reveal unexpected outcomes. This free webinar is the first step of your unique digital storytelling journey, and a gateway to further explorations of image, sound, and digital media.
After 20 years of teaching the face to face version of our Digital Storytelling Workshop, the advent of cloud-based editing has made it possible for us to support a fully online version of our well-tested workshop. Over the course of six weeks, experienced StoryCenter facilitators will guide you in crafting and producing a 2-4 minute digital story based on a 300 word narration script.
Since the development of our three day workshop model in the early 1990s, we have helped some 20,000 people conceive and create their first digital story. The genre, a 2-4 minute short video – deeply personal, elegantly presented – has become a new form of communication, ideal for the social media world we now inhabit. Come to where the digital storytelling movement began, and experience the transformative power of digital storytelling!
Our traditional model of digital storytelling tends to emphasize facilitative process and a singular approach to writing over the development of a visual narrative and “ways of looking” in relation to media production. This workshop puts image and design in the spotlight, focusing on the use of visual communication in digital storytelling. For those familiar with StoryCenter's digital storytelling model, the workshop is a chance to re-consider central premises of the process while exploring visual creativity. For those new to our methods, it's a chance to experience an innovative approach to media-making.
At StoryCenter, we believe digital storytelling facilitators must bring expertise across multiple disciplines in order to successfully guide people through workshops with the highest level of creative, educational, and ethical consideration. Our Digital Storytelling Facilitators’ Intensive is designed for those interested in learning methods of digital storytelling facilitation. We offer skills assessment and focused opportunities for participants to develop capabilities in story content, visual design, facilitation of individual and group processes, and technology teaching.
Story Facilitation workshops
Listening is our core technology. These workshops explore the role of story and story facilitation practices in your life and community.
This webinar offers an introduction to the use of story in our personal and professional lives, and the transformative potential of story for individuals, organizations, and communities. Requisite introduction for two day Story Facilitation workshops.
Holding a space for deep listening and transformational learning is sometimes a calling, but it is also a skill that can learned and assessed. This two-day workshop offers participants tools and practice in story facilitation. More than ever, we need our helping professionals, our teachers, our leaders; to understand how to listen and support the emergence of voice.
Special Topic Workshops
We offer informational and in-depth webinars and workshops for public health practitioners, educators, and other professionals.
It's hard to keep up with the volume of work produced in StoryCenter's many collaborative projects and public workshops. Here's your chance to view some of the most touching, inspiring, and visually creative videos created over the past year, with brief commentary about methods used and audiences reached. Selected and presented this quarter by our Silence Speaks Director, Amy Hill.
For the first time, we are offering a workshop that allows the "scripts" of narrated digital stories to emerge from an interview process using the Listening Station as the recording tool. Participants will designing question sets, interview each other for 15 minutes each, cut the interviews to three to five minutes, and complete a digital story in WeVideo, using existing images and video or material created on the iPad.
Immersive videos add an entire new dimension to exploring our stories and how they are experienced by our communities. Over three days participants will learn how to operate a VR camera, develop a narration, shoot appropriate material, and edit and complete a story.
The Institute will be designed by StoryCenter Executive Director Joe Lambert in collaboration with partnering education-based practitioners engaged in the content areas for each themed gathering. The Institute will be a mix of creative activities, presentations, and discussions over a five day immersion.
Storytelling can be a valuable tool for public health researchers and practitioners. Our methods support local community members in sharing first-person narratives and turning them into videos that can be used for training, community mobilization, advocacy, and more. These free, one-hour webinars offer participants a broad introduction to our work in public health, and an understanding of how our public health partnerships work.
Whether you are an educational technologist, an educator working in language arts and humanities, the social sciences, natural sciences, or community education for youth and adults, or someone who plays an educational role for your organization or institution, digital storytelling is an incredibly powerful way for you to foster your creativity, engage communities, transform your perspective, and support you in reflecting upon learning and life process.
Since 1993, StoryCenter has collaborated with individuals, grassroots groups, and organizations to centralize first-person stories in social justice efforts. The current political reality demands ever-more creative approaches to advocacy.
