Explore how food connects us to culture, place, and the stories that shape who we are. Through StoryCenter’s globally recognized digital storytelling approach, you’ll reflect on the foods, traditions, and memories that connect you to the places and communities you call home.

Food carries the stories of our families, our histories, and our relationships with the land. It can reveal the influence of migration, cultural traditions, local ingredients, and changing landscapes.

In this workshop, you’ll create a personal digital story exploring what food means to you and how it reflects your relationship to culture and place. You’ll write and record a first-person narrative in your own voice and learn to use photographs, video, and sounds to bring your story to life.

This workshop is for people of all video-editing experience levels and includes six group meetings, plus individual support. Through engagement in the workshop activities and individual assignments, participants will:

  • Identify a personal story about food and its connections to culture, place, and lived experience.

  • Craft a written narrative or script that explores the meaning behind a food, meal, ingredient, or culinary tradition.

  • Create an audio recording of their narrative.

  • Assemble photographs, video clips, and sounds—including images of food, its preparation, and the places and people connected to it—to accompany their voiceover.

  • Edit and finalize a short digital story, with support throughout the process regardless of previous video editing experience.

Together, we’ll explore how food connects personal experience to larger stories of cultural identity, belonging, heritage, and our relationships with the places we inhabit. Each participant will finish the workshop with a video they have made based on their story.

This workshop requires attendance at six online sessions. Each session is two hours and begins at 9 am Pacific Time/ 11 am Eastern Time.

The workshop closes when registration reaches capacity.
